Helen L. Patten

Helen L. Patten, 102, formerly of Cornell, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at the Chippewa Manor Nursing Home in Chippewa Falls.

She was born on August 18, 1900, in the town of Arthur, Chippewa County, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Najbrt) Svoma.

She married David Patten on June 13, 1923, in Crescent. After her husband's death in 1949 she went to work at the Cornell Paper Mill and also worked as a Janitor for the Cornell High School for 25 years. She was a Gold Star Mother having lost a son during the Korean Conflict.

Helen had been a very active member of the Cornell American Legion Auxiliary. She resided in Cornell until 1989 when she moved to Eau Claire and entered the Chippewa Manor Nursing Home in 1999.

Survivors include: one son LeRoy (Jean) Patten of Eau Claire; son-in-law, Jim (Irene) Ludwigson of Eau Claire; one sister, Wilma Struck of Eau Claire; two brothers, Dr. L. R. (Marian) Svoma of Strum and Elmer (Rose) Svoma of Chippewa Falls; four grand children; Victoria (Gary) Cox of White Bear lake, Minn., Lisa (Tim) Swoboda, Mary Slifer and Alex Patten, all of Eau Claire; and 6 Great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; two daughters, Rose and Geraldine; three sons, David, Lyle and Edwin; one sister, Rose; 6 Brothers, Victor, John, Frank, Alfred, Henry and Joe.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cornell with Rev. Brad Carloss officiating. Burial will be in the Bohemian Cemetery in the town of Arthur, Chippewa County.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Borton Funeral Home in Cornell and one hour prior to services at the Church on Thursday.
